Maya 2025 | Problems with GPU Caches

Greetings all

I'm an IT Administrator for a 3D Graphics academy. My students are having problems viewing their GPU Caches in the Viewport (they have missing textures/model completely broken/sometimes maya crashes completely with an ACCESS_VIOLATION error). In the 3D Rendered view they all appear normal tho, we use Vray and also tried Arnold, they work with no problems.

This problem seems to occur ONLY on maya version 2025/.1/.2/.3, in maya 2024 the GPU Caches have no problems.

We tried resetting the preferences of maya but to no avail. We tried on different machines with different components (gpu,cpu,ram..) and with different files.

Let me know if any of you had the same problem or are facing similar issues.

+1 I also have this problem with gpu cache in Maya 2025.3 on Rocky Linux 9.4. I have a  NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 using the drivers version: 535.146.02

Anyone from Autodesk can confirm and acknowledged  this bug please

I have contacted support and provided them with a test scene and they confirmed the problem on their side as well. There is hope.

Don’t get your hopes up too high, cache never really worked. I don’t know any animator that actually uses it because it never gets reliable results.

Just looping in here that I'm facing errors here as well - and still present in Maya 2026. It's unfortunate that gpuCaches have become this unreliable, I'm facing the issues on both Rocky Linux and Windows 11.

It seems to fail to load the caches... and once it starts to fail, it never seems to resume loading anything until you unload and reload the gpuCache plug-in.

The only way I've found to avoid this is to disable "Read Cache Files In Background" in Settings/Preferences > GPU Cache > Advanced Display Settings > Background Reading.

Disable "Automatic" and disable "Read Cache Files In Background".

After changing the toggle, make sure you have no gpuCaches in the scene (e.g. do "new scene") then unload gpuCache plug-in and reload it again to ensure it's completely refreshed. Now try things again. With that setting changed it seems the gpuCaches load fine, but with the downside that you'll have to wait on scene open for them to get fully loaded.

But at least they load.

The fact that background loading fails to continue to complete can then also be confirmed by running:

gpuCache -query -waitForBackgroundReading `ls -type gpuCache`;

Which essentially forces a "wait" for all gpuCaches to finish their background read. But it'll just hang indefinitely. 🙂

I just replace the gpu cache with aiStandin (Arnold Standin) the arndol standin node can load a alembic without issue and can display it in shaded, bounding box, etc
This is vastly superior to using the GPU cache node in my opinion and it is not broken.

I strongly suggest anyone using GPU Cache to switch the Arnold standins instead.

Cheers
