Maya 2018 Arnold error "access has been denied"

Hello,

I have a problem with Arnold and the mtoa accessability.

I do get the message that Arnold is not accessable  and will switch to maya software.

I followed the SolidAngle solution by downloading the newest version of mtoa. It clearly stated I already had mtoa installed.

however when I go to the manager plugin and try to load the mtoa dll it gives me the error message that access has been denied.

I also reinstalled maya 2018 with the same result.

What to do plz?

Hi @lleuwelyn your title 'cant access Arnold' was edited for clarity by @sean.heasley

Hi @lleuwelyn and welcome to the community!

This sounds like an administrative issue on your machine. Are you the admin on your machine and or is it possible that you may have restricted privileges?

If not, could you please attach a screenshot of the error message so I can see if there are any potential details that may help me figure out a solution for this?

Let me know if anything changes!

the last few words "toegang geweigerd" mean "access denied".

Arnold used to be working before and I didnt really change anything about it as I'm new to maya.

It is a student version of maya 2018 in which I got mtoa in the same package.

Also when I download mtoa from solid angle it states its already installed

I also have all administrative rights on my machine

Hi @lleuwelyn

Thanks for coming back with more information as well as the screenshot!

Have you tried uninstalling the plug-in completely and then reinstalling it?

Steps to uninstall and reinstall arnold can be found here!

Let me know if it works for you or if you need any more assistance!

yes I removed it all and reinstalled it, with the same results.

Hi @lleuwelyn

Hmmm, it's a stretch, but can you try selecting auto load then close Maya and restart to see if you still receive the same error?

If this doesn't work, you may need to perform a clean uninstall/reinstall of Maya.

Please let me know how it goes!

Please check the script editor for other messages. Post them here.

access denied? It's probably some permissions error

Here are the script editors. One is from the startup after opening maya, the next is after I tried to load.

Ok, unfortunately that's not enough.

If you get a Process Monitor log, I'll take a look.

Hi

MtoA cannot find Arnold (ai.dll).

First, double check your mtoa module file.

   C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Modules\Maya\2018\mtoa.mod

Does it add "bin" to the PATH?

Check PATH in Maya. Run this MEL: system( "set  PATH" )

Does the PATH have C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2018\bin in it?

Does ai.dll exist in C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2018\bin ? There should be 13 files in that folder, including ai.dll

ai.dll does exist in C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2018\bin and it does contain 13 items

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Modules\Maya\2018\mtoa.mod does not add "bin" as far as I can see. screenshot below

mtoa.PNG

from the MEL check, C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2018\bin is in there.

mtoa.mod is a text file, so you can use a text editor to check.

In any event, PATH seems to be set correctly.

However, the Process Monitor log shows that maya.exe never looked in C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2017\bin

That makes me think it could be a permission problem.

Try this:

- In the Maya script editor, create a Python tab

- Paste in this script

import arnold

- Start logging with Process Monitor

- Run that Python command

- Stop logging

- Does maya find ai.dll?

- What's logged in the script history? NOTE You can copy and paste text from the script history.

maya.exe still isn't looking in the locations that are supposedly in the PATH (like MASH/bin and mtoadeploy/2017/bin)

But "access denied" isn't because of the PATH. If the PATH wasn't right and DLLs could not be found, you wouldn't get "access denied"

Can you download AccessChk?

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/accesschk

And then run

accesschk C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2018\bin

and

accesschk C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2018\

Open a Command Prompt window, and run accesschk from the command line. For example, I ran this command to check all the folders, and send the output to a txt file:

C:\Users\blairs\Downloads\AccessChk\accesschk.exe C:\solidangle\mtoadeploy\2017\ > accesschk01.txt

I must not be doing this right I guess....

can the "access denied" also not be something that is lost in translation in between english and Dutch?

Where is the file accesschk.exe located?

Notice how I included the full path to the exe in my example.
