Maya 2017 and Alembic Animation Import Crash

Hi All,

I have exported a stitched Alembic (.abc) animation from Realflow (Just a fairly low resolution test) and trying to import this into Maya 2017. It loads the file but Maya 2017 crashes when I scrub the timeline. When I switch to wireframe it works fine.

The strange thing is, I have tested the exact same .abc file on Maya 2015 and Maya 2016 without any issues. Can scrub while using smooth shade view.

Is this a known Maya 2017 issue?

Please let me know if I need to provide more details.

Thank you,

Ruan

Hi!

Please upload a scene-file, if it's not to big.

Hi -

Thanks for the reply - Please see scene file attached.

I have opened this file with Maya 2015 and Maya 2016 - no problem at all, scrubbing with shaded view actually quite responsive. Trying the exact same thing in Maya 2017, crash! Only way I can scrub in 2017 is with wireframe in the viewport.

Oh and I am on a MAC - not sure if that makes a difference?

VERSION:

Maya 2017 Update 2

Please let me know if you have the same issue.

Thanks!

Hi!

The ABC Cache imported or referenced plays fine here on PC with Maya 2017 update 2, also in smooth shaded view in Viewport 2.0  and legacy Viewports.

Maybe it's a problem with your graphic card hardware/driver, try a legacy Viewport.

It may also be a problem/ bug with Maya 2017 and MAC but i can't test this.

Thanks I thought that it will work fine on PC. I did test it on two different Macs so might be an issue with the OSX version.

Thanks for your time I really appreciate it!

Hi Ruan,

Just wondering if you ever found a solution to this problem. I'm experiencing the same issue on my PC running Maya 2017 Update 2. My alembic cache comes in fine, but as soon as I play it back or scrub the timeline it crashes maya. I've also tried it on another PC in the office with a different graphics card and had the same problem, so it doesn't seem to just be a graphics/driver problem.

If you or anyone else have a solution that would be great!

Thanks,

-Connor

Hi Connor,

Yes I managed to resolve the issue! It has something to do with the viewport renderer!
You have to switch to the classic or older viewport.

I did a tutorial on it that you can watch here: https://youtu.be/drVtRegrsHM

Let me know if it fixes your problem as well.

Thanks,
Ruan
