Maya 2016 hotkeys mysteriously stop working

After a few minutes of use my Maya 2016 hotkeys mysteriously stop working all together.  Unable to use standard W E R navigation hotkeys, spacebar, etc.  I'm using Windows 10 64bit.  Super frustrating.

Anyone run into this problem?  Any solutions are greatly appreciated.

Try a reset of your preferences.
Rename the folder prefs in folder 2017 to something like prefs_backup, or to reset everything, the folder 2017 to 2017_backup. Maya creates new folders. Detailed at:
