Maya 2016 - can't select my object in viewports...

Hello

I am having a problem where i cannot select my object in the viewports, first i thought i was clicking on my image planes until i layered them and found out i cannot press on my object to manipulate it,(vertex, faces etc.) im kind of stuck right now and i cannot do anything, my Maya is a new install (few months old) so everything is default and i am trying to work on a new project when i am done sorting this problem out.

EDIT 1: I can select my object through the Outliner, but when i deselect it i have to reselect it through the Outliner again.

If anyone can help me with this i would greatly appreciate it!

Need more info...

What type of object are you trying to select?

Have you disabled any of the selection tools on the top menu bar?

What display mode are you in?

Is the object assigned to a templated layer?

If you could post a screenshot or two - may help narrow the issue down as well.

Hello

This problem does not occur when i use NURBS shapes it only happens in Polygon primitive shapes

as far as i know i have not disabled anything selection tool menu but if you think i have please point it out to me

With Polygon primitive shapes this happens in all the viewports, with NURBS however i select it and manipulate it in any viewport.

I created a new scene to test it out but with the same results, i cannot select anything from the Polygon primitive shapes present in the scene.

Are there any display layers in your scene?

Are you able to post your scene file?

One possibility is that the selection mask for polygonal objects has been turned off.  Try toggling the icon idicated in the image below, and see if that makes a difference.

There is another situation that causes similar behavior.  (I doubt this applies to your case, since you said it happens to all objects even in a new scene; but I'm putting this out there for anyone else who may have the problem.)  Transforms have a setting in the Attribute Editor, under "Display > Drawing Overrides".  If you check the "Enable Overrides" option, and set the "Display Type" to "Reference", you will not be able to select the object in the viewport.  This affects all objects under the transform.  So if it is applied to a group, all of the geometry under that group will be unselectable.

I already have that enabled, i also checked out the display setting to check if it wasnt set to reference, at this point im kind of lost at what to do.

EDIT 1: When i use a Polygon primitive in smooth mode i can manipulate it as i wish, this applies to every Polygon primitive shape, but when i switch back to wireframe the same problem occurs again, i cant select anything that comes from Polygon primitive's.

I found the solution

I uninstalled my GPU driver and installed the new beta driver from the AMD website

http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/latest-catalyst-windows-beta.aspx

If anyone has the same problem like i did you should try uninstalling your driver and installing the one i linked above, after i did this my problems with the polygon shapes was fixed

Thank you n8skow and rflannery for the help!

Another solution to this is to check if your computer is using the right graphics card, everything was working fine for me until we had some people organizing our office, they put one of my monitor cables into the integrated graphics card, and this created the weird maya problem, i tried reinstalling both maya and graphics drivers before i figured it out, just putting the cable back and maya worked again.
