Maya 2014 render crash

Hey peeps!

I can't seem to render any image.  I am using Maya 2014 with 64-bit Windows 8.  Everything seemed to be working well, but now for some reason I can't render any image.  I have tried using Hardware, Software and Mental Ray.  When I try to "render current view" Maya crashes.  I know this isn't much information to work with, but would be grateful for any help at all.

Hey,

Could you specify your hardware specs ? Does it show any error in the script editor or does it simply instantly crashes ?

Alternatively you could upgrade to a more recent version.

Hey Robin!

I'm not sure of the proper protocol for replying, and hope this is ok...

My hardware specs are as follows. AN older i7 dell inspiron with 24 GB ram and an 8GB Nvidia Geforce RTX. I'm
not actually sure if I've tried to render since getting the Nvidia card installed.

Maya instantly crashes when I try and render. But it crashes no matter what method I use for rendering (hardware, software, etc)
And my understanding is that a software render shouldn't use the card.

Thank you so much for taking an interest. I can't get official help from Autodesk because I am not a subscriber. I'm not sufficiently
cash powerful to be able to upgrade to a newer version of maya. I've tried googling the problem, but haven't found anything useful.

Many thank yous
John.

Hey, it's indeed unlikely to be an hardware issue considering your specs. Just to be clear, you have tried Maya rendering and Mental ray ? I'm not familiar with the 2014 version so I don't know if it comes with it but have you tried Arnold ? And does the issue also appear when running an IPR instead ?

Some rendering engines do use the GPU but as far as I know, Maya and Mental ray both rely on CPU.

I believe maya stores crash logs even when it does not prompt any errors before closing, in Disk:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp you might want to look there.

Hey Robin!

Really stumped here...
I've tried rendering using Maya Software, hardware and mental ray. I have tried using the IPR as well.
When Maya crashes it does attempt to save in the c:/users/username/AppData/Local/temp folder that
you advised me about, but I cannot seem to access that directory on my computer.

I don't have Arnold.

Do you know of any way to get help from Autodesk for a non-subscriber?

Welcoming any additional advice or ideas!!!

John.
