Material Override for Viewport Only

Does anyone know of a way to have a material override that's only present in the viewport? I'm working on something that requires alot of solid color surface shaders in the render, but I also need to tweak the geometry a bunch and then see it rendered. So, I keep needing to override the material to lambert to work on the geo, and then removing it to render. It's not that bad, just annoying and repetative to do it that way.

In the shading menu just above the viewport you can select "use default material." That will display the default lambert for all objects.

This was working perfectly yesterday, but I opened my scene today and whenever I turn on "use default material" any object that DOESN'T have lambert1/initialshadinggroup applied becomes transparent. The problem doesn't happen in a new scene. Is there some setting or connection that could have gotten broken?

I've never seen that happen before. What kind of materials are you using on the objects that are becoming transparent? And do you have any customized settings in your Viewport 2.0 options?

They're just surface shaders. They're in a referenced file though, so maybe that's why. It's just weird that it was working before.
