Marquee Selection Bug - Camera Based Selection Turned On?

Hi - first time posting here, and I've not been able to find answers anywhere else before this, so here's hoping!

Ever since Maya 2021, I've had a selection bug that persists even after a fresh reinstall of the software and resetting of the preferences. To the best of my knowledge, there's been no script, hotkey, or preference change to cause Camera Based Selection to toggle on (or off) from the defaults anywhere I've looked in the software (Modelling Toolkit, Tool Settings, and Preferences).

This problem has followed me through Maya 2021, 2022, 2023, and even to 2024. Unfortunately, this means that I'm stuck in Maya 2020 for much of my work (a little frustrating when working in production). It's the same issue, with the same tests yielding the same results. Nothing I've been able to do has fixed the issue.

I've seen one or two threads with others experiencing a similar issue, but the solutions made for them haven't worked for myself (one apparent work-around was to disable Backface Culling, but I often have to work through other meshes, and it didn't work in any case. Another was to switch to the Legacy Viewport, though from what I understand, that's no longer an option with 2024 and I additionally have no idea nor context as to how to do that). Suffice to say, I'm at my wit's end.

This issue continues not only with Face Selection, but with Edges, Verts, UVs - the lot!

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm rather keen to move on from Maya 2020 and take advantage of some of the updates since then, but until I work out how to sort this, I'm rather stuck. I'll include a few GIFs to show what's happening.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The only way I can replicate your issue is if the mesh has backface culling enabled. (under Mesh Component Display)

Legacy viewport used OpenGL selection which was done in software and therefore was not affected by things like backface culling.

Viewport 2.0 selection is done in hardware and that is why you are seeing a difference.

It is certainly a regression from legacy viewport but I'm not sure whether this is considered a bug or not. (as I can imagine good arguments on both sides as to whether selection should respect the backface culling setting)

That's sorted it, thank you!

I had it on Wire because I often have to make building interiors, and it's just a little easier, but I think from now on I'll likely use XRay if I want something similar. Thank you again, that's been an amazing help!
