Manipulator's axes fails to allow being selected in Maya 2016

I'm using Maya 2016. After some minutes working or certain amount of geometry modeled, it won't let me select many of the manipulator's axes (Translate, Rotate or Scale) with either the left or the middle mouse's button in some or all of the views. The axes randomly fail to allow being selected. This is extremely problematic and annoying since I cannot select the geometry when the problem pops up. I am stuck with this problem, please HELP!

That's good to know. Unfortunately Mental Ray will not be available for purchase anymore; I'm guessing Maya 2016 won't be available for downloading. Not that said rendering software is/was the best, but changing to others take time and sometimes can be traumatic as it happens with this incident.

I don't remember the exact date I upgraded OS from Mavericks to High Sierra, but I think it was around December 2017. Besides, I installed two updates on January 19/2018 and February 13/2018.

I haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling Maya 2016, should I do it? Just delete its folder and then download and install again?

Hi!

Maya does not support 2 GPU's for Viewport display. It might be worth to try out what happens when only one card is active or physically installed.

But the most recent change to the system before this happened should be responsible for the problem.

If nothing else helps you can try to uninstall and re-install Maya.

Hi Marko,

So do you suggest that a technician removes one of the GPU cards and see how it works? Aren't both essential to the speed and quality of the workflow with a computer? Sorry, I am not an expert on these matters.

On the other hand, should I delete Maya 2016's folder and re-install it?

Hi!

There are only a few applications that benefit from multiple GPU's and some of the only under special circumstances.

The only case where i would to recommend to use more than one card is if a renderer supports rendering on the GPU.

If there are 2 cards they may block each other if not configured correct (physical configuration + driver).

Also make sure not to use any onboard GPU.

If you want to re-install don't just delete the maya 2016 folder, do a clean uninstall first.

Yes, remove that directory and reinstall 2016 if you have the installer (make sure it’s for SP6). There are other files on disk to remove, but I don’t have the links to the clean uninstall guides on hand (google “clean uninstall Autodesk Maya Mac”). Also, if you don’t want to use 2018, you can also remove that.

@mspeer
The dual D500 cards in the Apple Mac Pro 2013 are designed in such a way that you can’t remove them, or disable one card. Apple did a bang up job of becoming a headache with that one. The guys at Foundry specifically had to add an option to support ‘Dual’ cards when using GPU acceleration for Nuke because of this.

As Maya 2016 came out well after the Mac Pro’s release, it should support it just fine.

Cheers,
Mike

Thank you,

I followed your instructions although I did not clean uninstalled Maya, according to the instructions I found online it implied looking for some hidden folders and I could not do it even using the Mac's Terminal; but It seems to be working now just fine, finally!!!

This will be very helpful until the software is discontinued on January 2019.

Have a nice day.

Great to hear! If for any reason Maya starts acting up like this just reach back out. Also, if you’re a subscription or maintenance member definitely make use of the support cases feature in your account. It’ll put you in direct contact with the Autodesk support team!

Cheers,
Mike
