Interactive Bounding Box Display

I'm talking about a feature that when you start camera panning/moving, the objects are displayed as bounding boxes and when you stop camera panning/moving, the display goes back to what it was. wireframe, smooth shaded etc.
I might have stumbled upon this years ago in 3DsMax because it seems it's a feature there.
For heavy scenes it would be very attractive to have this in Maya.
Is there a way I can implement this. I'm looking for a callback for the camera and viewport possibly.
How do I even find the callbacks that exist in Maya to see if I can find something to play with?
