Instances that deform with surface

Hi,

I wanted to paint some instanced shapes onto some cloth in a way that they look like a sort of chain of beads or sequins that has been sewn in shapes and patterns onto fabric

Is it possible to place instances in a way that they would all orient to a curve or brushstroke on a surface and then also follow the underlying mesh when it deforms and animates?

I've tried the MASH placer node, which gives exactly the effect I want,  but it doesn't follow along with deformations of the cloth surface. Xgen does deform with the mesh but I can't seem to accurately control the rotation of the instances when initially placing them so that they orient to follow the flow of a curve.

Would it be better to just make the braid or beads independent of the cloth surface and try to wrap or shrinkwrap it?

Or can paint effects maybe do this kind of thing?

Thanks
