Import and Replacing objects with the same name; like Import>Replace in Max

I am wanting to replace objects in a scene with remodeled versions of the same object from a different file.  These models will have the same names.

Is there a way to replace many objects on import, similar to the way that it is done in 3DS Max?  I am trying to move my workflow from Max to Maya.

Hi!

I believe you could do this with a MEL script. Like a custom importer.

You import, check the name of the objects, and if they are the same as something already in the scene, you first delete it, and then import.

Hope the idea helps!

Doesn't Maya Importer do it by default?
Which to me is annoying. I wish to see a prompt as least with an option to rename instead just swapping assets from a scene if it happens to have the same name.

This can be done. Export your object as a alembic with only one frame. And when you import it replace it.
