How to render a video and have a video file ?

Hello, I am a beginner on Maya, I have to make a 3D animation for a project at school. I would like to know how to generate a video file and not a folder containing all the frames of the video, I tried selecting "mov" as format and it does not work either. I saw somewhere that it was advised to do it using another software.Could someone explain me a simple way to do it? (sorry I don't know which category to put this post in)
Thanks

Hi!

Maya does not provide any codecs to render into a video format, so you are tied to the video codecs provided by the OS. There are also many more reasons why it's not advisable to render directly to a video file.

Get any video application that can import image sequences and render out a video file in whatever format you prefer, that's the only option that makes sense.
