I am trying to put together a tree in Maya by making leaf planes with transparent textures and sticking them around a oval mesh.
I was having some success and finished one clump of leaves. I then did a second clump of leaves, only to find out that somewhere along the way I'd accidentally messed something up with the first clump, causing them to display incorrectly. It's hard to describe what happened in words (I tried doing a number of searches), and I can't figure out what the issue is.
From what I can tell, the leaf planes on my first clump of leaves and my second clump of leaves are all identical and use the same materials, so I don't know why they're displaying differently. In addition, some of the leaves aren't even rendering. I'm very very confused. Each plane has a aiTwoSided material, and each of the sides are aiStandardSurface materials, and I'm using the arnold renderer.
I'd like to know the cause of this, and how to fix it so I have a better understanding of what went wrong. I feel like there are some settings that I don't understand that are causing this to happen.
I've attached the scene file for reference.
As a side note any tips on how to better optimize this method of making leaves would be appreciated, it feels like I'm doing it in a very clunky way and maybe there's a more elegant approach. Currently I'm just duplicating a group of three planes and manually snapping them to the outside of the 'spheres'
Thank you~
