Error "Invalid file type specified: Maya Mel Files"

Hello community,

fighting with an odd error for some weeks now. 

"Invalid file type specified: Maya Mel Files"

The software seems to be unable to read/load/import/export .mel files. 

Current version: Maya 2016 SP6 + Mental Ray (for Maya 2016)

Because i couldn´t find anything related to this error i created this thread with the hope to find some ideas to fix it.

Are you trying to open the mel file using the normal "open / import" options in Maya or using the scripting window? Mel is a type of scripting language and probably wont work when opening using the 3D aspect of Maya, you'll need to open the Mel/Python scripting window and open the mel file that way. Best of luck!

Trying to use materials from the mental ray plugin. That´s the error i receive. 

A complet reinstall of all Autodesk software and other possible fixes failed. 

This error drives me crazy.

Because I'm experiencing the same error and can't find any fixes, so any help would be appreciated
