Can't Import Illustrator Curves

I'm having some odd issues importing closed Illustrator curves into Maya 2016. They work fine when I use the Bevel option, but if I try to import them as curves nothing shows up. I'm saving the curves as Illustrator Version 8 curves as the documentation suggests. 

Ideas?

maybe share your file so I can see what could be the problem?
