Attribute Window empty

I have recently enrolled in the 3D animation program at Fullsail University, and with my enrollment I received Maya 2013.  I am teaching myself the software before I actually get to the class that will teach it to me using the Intro to Maya 2013 book.  heres my problem...

I have been following all the instructions both in the book and on the built in tutorials that come with Maya and they reference the Attribute window a lot.  Whenever I select an object nothing shows in the attribute window.  It is just an empty box with nothing in it.  All the drop downs at the top are blank too, with the exception of the selected object.  How do I get the attributes for the objects to appear in their attribute window.  I have tried many things and cant get them to show up.

Please could somebody with more experience help meknow why its doing this andhow do I solve it?

Really each of the drop-downs in the picture are empty accept for add attribute, edit attribute, and reselecting the object from the drop-downs. even when I select those options nothing happens.

I'm not sure what would be causing this. One possible problem might be that it's not set to auto load the selected object. You can check that by going to the Attribute Editor. In the "List" menu, the first item is "Auto Load Selected Objects." If that's not checked, it won't load it automatically, only if you go List>Load Selected Objects.

Let me know if that works or not.

Thank you for your diligence in helping me with this issue.  I do have that box checked.  The firstplaces I looked were in the drop downs in the attribute window itself.  I have even shut it off and selected load attributes, and it does nothing.  This is very frustrating and Autodesk is doing nothing to help me at all.  If you can think of anything else at all please let me know because I am lost in this new program without having this issue on top of it.

If that's the case, then the only other thing I can think of is to delete your preferences and let Maya rebuild a new set of preferences from scratch. Sometimes that takes care of weird issues like this.

On the Mac, your user preferences are in Users/username/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/maya/2013-x64. Quit Maya. Delete or rename the "prefs" folder. Restart Maya, and it should build a fresh prefs folder. Then see if you are still having the same problem.

I have found some new information.  It looks like there is an error with Autodesk locating a specific file.  I have looked around and nobody seems to have a fix for this either.  the error reads...

// Error: file: /Applications/Autodesk/maya2013/Maya.app/Contents/scripts/others/updateAE.mel line 527: Cannot find procedure "AEsetDisplayToNodes".

Maybe this will help solve the issue.

I have resolved the issue.  If anybody needs the answer moving forward Fullsail university has a turtle patch that resolves this.
