A 4k “square” image resolution needs to match your image plane size settings as well as your render settings , you need to match the pixel size ratio, that’s why is squeezed.

  • Adjust "Fit" setting: Select the image plane, open the Attribute Editor, go to the "Placement" tab, and try setting "Fit" to "Size". If that doesn't work, try "Best".

if is not for a still image a square format is not suitable for film/animation work.

Hi,
Thanks for the response.

I created a reference image for my matte painting workflow in Photoshop
using the 4k DCI 2160p document preset. However, when I import this same
image into the camera image plane of the Maya 2026 trial version, it
appears squeezed and does not match the original aspect ratio.

Please see attached files for the same
