Xgen dynamic hair system not rendering

I am trying to create dynamic windswept hair. To do this I follow these steps:

1. Use xgen to create hair and then sculpt the static hair. 
2. add a linear wire modify to create the wires

3. select to make the wires dynamic (this creates the nucleus solver) 

4. modify the wind property and reduce gravity. 

Pressing play at this point shows the solver working and I can see in the viewport that my hair follows the wires. 

if I try and render a single frame, this renders the static hair, and not what is represented in the viewport for the current frame. 

What am I missing in this process? Do I need to cache the result first and export this for Arnold to render this? I am very much still learning maya, so I would be interested if there are easier ways to achieve this. Or any good resources on this specific behaviour. There are plenty of guides for ncloth. But not for xgen to a hair system.
