Texture as mask to color particles passing through its influence?

Taurus with Teal Noise Flower Jesse Higman.jpg

Is there a way to use an animated noise texture as a kind of mask with which to color particles passing through its influence?

I have a taurus shape acting as earth’s magnetic rays. Particles move across its surface using goals. In the nParticleShape node I have changed the colors using a ramp of various colors based on age.

I have done as much rough research as I can but I am not sure if I have the correct question to find a specific answer yet. Would this be a per particle kind of expression? And, can an expression be used in order to color particles in addition to using the more general color aspect of the particle’s shading property? Or, most hopefully, is there a place to drop this surface shader with its animated noise texture where it can act as a mask on the particles?

I am trying to make a northern lights type of effect where this wavy noise, seen here in the upper region as the teal colored flower petals, will shimmer around the poles but its influence will only be seen as it changes the particles moving through it.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Jesse H.
