Taper nHair collisions

Hi,

I'm making stylized hair with nurbs curves, by using "make selected curves dynamic" and then setting the "collide width offset" to be quite large, to represent big sections of hair. Trouble is the collide width is consistent all the way along the curve - and where they meet at the scalp, they are too fat and fighting with eachother.

Is there an expression or some Mel or python that I could type in to taper the "collide width offset" value of Nhair, so that I can have them thin where they connect at the scalp but fatter when they're away from the body?

i.e., if the curve is called "curve40" and I want the "hairSystemShape1.collideWidthOffset" to be 1 at the start, 3 in the middle of the curve and 1 again at the end?

Thank you!
