Point to Surface Not Creating a Constraint

Point to Surface Not Creating a Constraint

Good morning all,

I've tried in vain for hours to research this, even going so far as to download a different version of Maya (from 2018 to 2016) in case it was a bug, but no luck! I'm hoping this will be a simple fix and I'm missing something obvious, and your help would be very much appreciated!

Basically, I am unable to create a Point to Surface constraint. I select the vertices of the cloth object (I've tried this in both vertex and component selection mode, not sure if this makes a difference?), shift+clicked the object I want to bind it to, and hit Point to Surface. The console reads "// Result:" and nothing happens - no constraint is created in Outliner, and the cloth object just drops. The only constraint I've been able to make successfully has been a Transform Constraint, presumably because this only requires vertices from one object?

Hope that makes sense - I'd really appreciate any advice you could give me! Thanks!

Hi!

Try this with 2 simple objects again, if it still does not work,

try a reset of your preferences.
Rename the folder prefs in folder 2018 to something like prefs_backup, or to reset everything, the folder 2018 to 2018_backup (or even the maya folder to maya_backup). Maya creates new folders (don't copy preferences from previous Maya versions). Detailed at:

Hi Same Problem and I managed to figure it out.. Be sure the mesh you want to "point to surface nconstraint" is not group or doesnt have any child..It should work..you should nconstraint before you group/parent...hope that help..:)

What worked for me was selecting my nCloth object in object mode and going to vertex mode by right click (not through the modeling toolkit).  Hope this helps.

Thanks richard.derteano. Without Right-clicking>Vertex the Point to surface Tool doesn't work. For example, going in vertex selection with F9 will not work and Point to surface will return an empty "result". Only by doing your right-clicking method does it work. Seems like a bug on Maya 2022 in my regards.

It may seem silly, but the reason i had this problem was because the object i was trying to constraint wasnt an ncloth yet, so maybe try to make the clothing mesh an Ncloth before trying to create the constraint.

Hope this helps!
