MMB cannot pan

Normally, clicking the Middle Mouse Button will pan around the plane in an up/down/left/right manner. For some reason I am unable to do that and so modeling has become very difficult. I've been using Maya and 3DS Max for a year now, and just this most recent time I opened it is when this problem occurred. I am still able to zoom in and out with the mouse wheel scroll, and I'm still able to use the mmb click and drag on a webpage. 

I am running Maya on Windows 7 and my mouse is a wired one from Logitech.

Any ideas?

did you push alt before panning ? 

if something strange happens with maya usually 

you need to delete preferences file 

which is located by default at %user%documents/maya/"version"/ find all preferences and delete them 

but , if will delete your preferences also - hotkey if any assigned customly etc etc ...
