I think I found a new hidden "feature".

maya 2017 SP2 - animated ramp doesn't work with nComponent node.

expressions work just fine

works in maya 2016 but not 2017.

if somebody knows what I'm doing wrong please let me know, otherwise I'll submit this as bug.

ah ok... found it.... set

the solution is to set the evaluation graph to DG
