Filling a object with curves?

Hi Guys
Id like to find out if there's a procedural way of going about animating curves to fill the surface of an object? will attach an example of what i am looking for which was done in houdini...
I have tried using mash flight node with trails after projecting curves on to a surface, but is that the best way to go about something like this?
