Butterflies through a trap door?

Hi,

I've just started a project and I need to make butterflies flutter through a trap door, starting with just a couple and then progressing to a whole swarm. My first thought was using particle effects, but I thought I'd see if anyone had any other ideas. Or am I basically on the right track?
