Problems with nested XGen IGS

Maybe it's just me but has anyone else noticed that XGen IGS doesn't seem to like being buried in several group nodes? I've seen a lot of student files lately where the grooms won't behave properly (i.e. can't make them dynamic, can make them dynamic but they won't follow guides, density issues / popping, etc.). I'd be interested to know if anyone else has come across this issue.

I'm currently trying to help a student where she can create a linear wire modifier and even can make it dynamic but it's not graying out the inGuide base node like it normally does. In addition, the hairSystem doesn't follow the head and the groom acts as though no linear wire or hairSystem is in the scene. But when I create a new groom that's at the top level (not buried in folders), it works fine.
