Particles emitting from surface go off course if surface has been modified

Modifying the geometry of a plane to make more random particle motion causes the particles to be emitted in directions other than the normal's. The video shows it better than I can explain it. I can attach the file if that helps, but I'm hoping the problem is obvious to those who know what they're doing.

I'm thinking it has something to do with how I added extra geometry and don't have quads in certain spots.

Hi!

 

Yes it's because of unregular geometry, it will be deformed in an uneven way and distortion will occur, see normals.

So basically, I can't just go adding edges like I did having some polygons be 5 sides instead of having quads everywhere?

Sorry this is what I was trying before. I guess what I really need to do is emit randomly on the top side of the surface and not from the vertices. Didn't think of that till now. I'm sure that's an option that I'll look for right now.

Who says it's different, have a look at the face normals.

This is not an even surface, so you have to correct this or use a workaround.
