Fluids simulation unusable when scaled up the 3D Container

I'm learning to use fluids and the 3D container and everything works as expected at the container's default size. But when I scale up the container beyond a certain size (maybe 3x or more), either by using the scale tool or the the Size attribute for the container, the simulation completely breaks down. Any of the following might happen: no fluid at all is seen when I play the animation, only parts of the emitting object or surface produces fluid and in strange ways, performance slows down dramatically, other unexpected behaviours.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? What's the proper way to scale up the 3D container? The default size is extremely small for real-world dimensions where 1 unit = 1 cm.
