cannot use nparticles

I just downloaded maya 2017 and I cannot use nparticles. I go to dislplay > show > nParticles and I get this message

"// Warning: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2016/scripts/startup/buildDisplayMenu.mel line 467: No objects to show."

I get this exact same message when I try to use nrigids, ncloth, or anything else from the "show" menu. I then downloaded maya 2016 to see if it was just a bug in the new version of maya and I STILL get the exact same message. Anyone have any ideas? I don't know what to do.

The same problem. I do not see the nParticles menu in the top bar and when I go to display> show> nParticles I get this error message: // Warning: file: C: / Program Files / Autodesk / Maya2018 / scripts / startup / buildDisplayMenu.mel line 483 : No objects to show.
