Skin Weighting your final extremely high model problem

Hi,
I am trying to fix the skin weights on my final High poly. (6 Million ) Doing this on a 6 million poly count is like downloading a 1 gig file back in 1990. (painfully slow)
I understand how to rig & animate a low res and then link it to the high res but not so much for skinning.
So what is the common way to fixs the weights on a high res model? Can they be transfer from low to high or do I have to work on the high?
