Red Cross stopping me from Painting Weights

Firstly I'm a 1st year uni student and a complete beginner at Maya or even 3D software, so please excuse me if there's an easy solution to my problem, I am also using the student version of Maya. I'm going crazy trying to fix the problem of the red cross stopping me from painting weights in Maya. My model is completely robotic so I thought it would be easy to paint it's weights once I saw a couple tutorials. The main problem is that the arms and feet of my robot cannot be painted for whatever reason. I've tried searching on YouTube and these forums for solutions and have tried them but have not worked. I need this model ready to be animated soon and my only solution is to post here hoping someone could help me out. I'll post my model for anyone better at using the program who might want to show me what the problem is. Thank you in advance for any solutions.

Hi!

It works here.

1. Select an object

2. Assign new material

3. 3D Paint (Assign/Edit Textures)

4. Start painting

Does your joint chain appear in your paint weights tool settings? If not, then you probably haven't skinned your mesh right. Don't forget to delete your mesh history before binding skin to joints

Also, you might have the joint hierarchy selected instead of the mesh to paint the weights on.
