Motion Capture with Faceshift

I'm an animation student and came across motion capture software called faceshift. There are lots of tutorials I watched that make the program look fairly easy to work with, but when they show how to add it to Maya it gets very confusing and seems to either miss steps or not show what I'm trying to do. I built a model and have it mostly rigged, just the head left to do. I don't understand how to apply mocap to my own rig when I import it into maya. Demos I watched seemed like A LOT of confusing work, but still wasn't clear how to get it on my rig. Do I use or add joints to somehow match up with mocap import? Do I even need blend shapes? I've worked with Maya for a little while, but still a newbie. I've used some mel scripting, but ... Hopefully someone has worked with this - or should I pick different software? Thanks, M
