Mirror Joint Options - Too Many Arguments error

I am new to Maya rigging. I am attempting to rig a four-legged animal (gopher), and I've been following a tutorial on YouTube. The tut is good however, I got stuck at the Mirror Joint Options dialog and cannot find an answer anywhere to this error message I received:  what does "Too Many Arguments" mean and what do I do to fix this? And please, not in techno-speak. I am not an expert and am learning Maya.

I am using Maya 2017; my rig is back leg and front leg with tail and spine.

So far I have done:

  • Created Left back and front legs
  • Created spine and tail
  • Connected Left Back Leg from joint to Pelvis joint
  • Connected Left Front Leg from joint to Chest joint
  • Transform Display - Local Rotation Axes
  • Oriented the joints to World (legs)
  • Attempted to Mirror Joints (legs) and got the error message.

It basically means you have too many items selected.

for Mirror joints. Maya only accepts 1 joint at a time to mirror.

select just the front joint(top of the chain. and mirror.

then select just the back joint ( top of chain ) and mirror.

Sadly, the mirror joints tools don't understand multiple selections.

Okay - I have an update on this issue:

According to the tutorial author (after four years I did not expect the author to answer my query) - the joints must be mirrored one at a time. So, select the rear left thigh joint and hierarchy and mirror to the right, then select the front left thigh joint and hierarchy and mirror to the right.  I was attempting to mirror both joints at the same time, because the author of the tutorial I was following did it that way.

I do not understand why it was so entirely difficult to find this resolution, seems to me anyone  who is new to rigging would come across this issue - I searched for hours after sending my original query to the author, whom I assumed could have moved on after four years and was not expecting an answer. Hours of researching with no answers, from forums, from groups, from Autodesk.

"Too Many Arguments" is an Autodesk response to the issue, without any definition published by Autodesk that I could find.  An inexperienced rigger is not going to view a joint as an "argument." If the response had been "Too Many Joints Selected" I would have worked that out on my own that I needed to do one at a time.

LOL ! You answered as I was answering.  Too funny.

Yes, you are correct, and thank you for responding.
