Maya Quick Rig: Character locked

Hi

I have just rigged a character and saved it. I then attempted to repaint the skin weights. I adjusted the skin weights and suddenly the character wont move when i adjust any of the controls. So I quit and open up the character again. The old character, which took ages to rig, is no locked, the controls dont work. I'm on a bit of a deadline with this one....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually i think the panic is over... I had not updated the control rig after making an earlier adjustment. However i still don't know how to adjust the skin weights on a maya quick rig character after it's been finished. Is this possible?

In answer to my own question, yes it is. The moral of the story is, make sure to click 'create/update' on your control rig and then skin after making any adjustments... once i did this i was able to use ythe paint skin weights tool and it worked fine...

Hold on, no, it did not work. I lost all the work I did on the hands. When I updated the control rig it did not include the hands which I had added in following the Roland Reyer tutorial quick rig- attach the hands

This is a known issue, in the description of the you tube video he explains how to fix it...phew!

'Maya 2020: Quick Rig + Attach hands' was the you tube tutorial for anyone who might experience this.

One annoying thing though, turning off display>transform display>local rotation axis doesn't work. The rig still has very annoying joint axis displays on the hands which make it fiddly to animate

See image below. Even I select the whole skeleton, select hierarchy, then toggle the local axis display off, some of the local axis are still displayed (weirdly not all of them) . They totally refuse to go away.

Amazingly the only way to do it is to go into each individual joint and deselect display local axis in the attribute editor

Hi there,

I'll follow up and see if we have a bug logged for this last issue with local axis display.  If not, I will log something.

Best regards,
Kelly

Thanks Kelly, There is definitely some sort of bug with the toggling system, toggling off doesn't correctly untick all the joint axis attributes, I think it's probably something to do with a mix up from previous groups of selections in the history....if that makes sense!

So finally, the solutions to the above problems

1: The character freezing is an issue with the tutorial I was following...There is a problem with the Human IK setup. The issue is described/resolved in the youtube description- you have to unlock the human ik definition, fix the problem and lock it back up again, and then the rig works (Maya 2020 QuickRig + Attach Hands)

2: Painting weights freezes the rig: It actually doesn't, the rig had the error above already

3: Toggle off/on the local rotation axis: This does seem to be a bug, the workaround is to select each joint and untick local rotation in the display section of the attribute editor.
