key frame not being added

im new to maya and we are currently doing a small unit of it for a course, unfortunately i fell behind on an assignment due to the consistent issues ive been having and prof not being much help, so i cant ask at this point. ive created my initial keyframe for a walk cycle, however when i go to do the 2nd one, it jumps right back to the first keyframe when i move off of it. ive tried both making a keyframe prior, and having no keyframe when making the 2nd. freezing transformations errors out, saying theres an incoming contact? but when i go to delete all history, my rig unbinds the skin from the skeleton and wont rebind. any ideas?

Hi!

You can add a file in the .zip format. But I don't think it will be necessary.

It sounds like you don't have "auto keyframe" toggled on. This option can be toggled on with a small button that has two round arrows and a keyframe on it on the bottom right of your timeline.

If it is highlighted red, like in the screenshot, it should automatically create a keyframe on channels that changed, if they already have a keyframe on them.

If this option is turned off, you'll have to keyframe your channels manually after changes by either hitting the "S" shortcut or rightclicking in the channelbox and using "Key Selected" in the dropdown Menu, otherwise the values will change back to their previous state if you change the current frame in the timeline.

Also, you should never use the "delete History" command on an already rigged character, since the rig is built out of history type nodes, so doing that will break your rig.

I hope this helps!

i figured it out, its actually because I selected everything when keying, I was creating separate keys for each part (have multiple parts in my rig that are separated but bound). so I basically have to just animate each part of my rig one at a time, each with their own keys. everything seems to be back to normal (i hope)
