How to pick the geometry/fix textures/import process on old rigs

Good day all,
My question(s) are quite simple.
I import old rigs into Maya 2017/18 and have texture issues on the geometry and can not pick the geometry on the character to make any changes
Here are the steps that I took:
-Downloaded rig
-I created a reference file of the rig first
-Then the rig gets imported
-Character is missing textures because normals are not correct during the import process
-I also can not pick the geometry on the character to correct the normals/texture problem (i.e. the eye on the character)(eye is black in viewport)
Other questions that come to mind:
Should I create a new project folder before referencing rig?
Should I place all texture files (png, jpg) into source image folder that maya creates by default when making new project?
Is there something that I need to do in the hypershade to solve the issue?
Please advise and thanks.
