How do i click one bone attached to root?

I have a wrist for my fps arms and i cant seem to select the thumb join , but if i do it selects the whole wrist , or in other word it selects the wrist "root"

Have you tried selecting the joint through the outliner? Sure, it may be a pain to dig through the structure, but should give you exactly what you want.
