Geometry mesh not visible after importing

Hi
Lately I am facing a problem while importing a scene with a rigged model, such as the popular Malcolm rig. This happens when someone else sends me a .ma file with the model. Whenever I open the .ma file, the NURB controllers show up, however the geometry mesh doesn't. Polygons visibility is checked in the Show panel. The model was not hidden. I have tried to go through the Outliner (even though the friend who created the file had not hidden any mesh) but everything is visible. The layers visibility is also turned ON. Has anyone of you faced this issue? Can you please provide any fix for this?
