Bidepal to Quadrupedal rig help?

Hello,

I am currently working on the rig for a character who is supposed to be able to transition from a bipedal to quadrupedal state.

The bipedal motion is no problem, but once I force the character into the quadrupedal position some issues with the controllers and constraints begin to pop up. For example, I haven't found a way to make the claws stick to the ground in the same way the feet do, and so whenever I shift the hip joints up and down the arms follow along, and make animating the arms a nightmare.

I am aware of IK/FK switches, I have made one for the legs and arms already, however, I'm not entirely sure about how I would make those solve my current problem.

As I might restart the rig or discard some parts of it, are there any tips for making this hybrid rig work?

Any sort of help would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I did quite a lot of research on biped/quadruped combo hindlegs. Some of the resources I referenced I found helpful are also linked on that page.

This is another good resource (a paper about biped/quadruped rigging on Madagascar 2)

Space switching should help you prevent the hands from moving with the hips when you don't want them to.

Thank you for your response! This is such a specific problem, I wasn't expecting a response at all.

Looking at all the research and workarounds needed for this rig to work, I'm starting to believe it might be out of my scope for the moment as I've only learned about rigging earlier this year. However I'll be learning from the resources you listed, and hopefully get it to work later on.

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks again!
