Autorig had made up a whole backward skeleton (as shown in screenshot).
Is there a way to correct the direction?

Is your geometry facing the positive Z direction? (Front by default)
Additionally, it appears you are rigging this mesh in a scene with other assets present. Is there a reason you are not rigging in a separate scene and referencing in the finished asset? This would be more forgiving if you end up needing to make changes later.
I admit I'm a beginner regarding rigging, so the reason have to be my incompetence 😅
