When I place a bone it replaced with a line that comes from the center

I am trying to rig a character i made and whenvever i place a bone the bone disapperas and is replaced by lines that start from the center.

Are you using an nVidia card? Evidently the latest drivers are causing issues with Maya skeletons. If you are, the solution is to roll back to the previous version driver.
