Rigging Problem

Hi everyone !

This is probably a very basic issue, but I'm really struggling with it.

I'm currently learning how to animate with Maya (I used to be a 2D animator), I modeled a basic bear character and created a skeleton for it, but I now have some issue to apply the rig to my character in order to make him move. Whenever I try to move a part of the body, the skeleton is moving, but not the character.

I tried to use the bind skin tool, but it didn't work well (only some parts of the character moved with the skeleton, like the butt or shoulders, but not the legs or the neck, and I don't know why).

I'm sorry for this very basic question, but I can't figure where the problem comes from. I'll be very grateful if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong Smiley Happy

Thanks a lot

Hi J450NP13, thanks for your answer !

So, in order to do that, I presume I am supposed to first separate the different parts (legs, torso, neck, etc) of my model, aren't I ? How can I do that without separate it into different objects (if I do that, I suppose the bear won't move properly, because his members won't be attached to each other, right ?) ?

Thanks for your answer everybody !

PS: Is it normal that there are so many sub-parts to my model (see the left window in the previous screen-captures) ? If not, how can I merge them ?

What you will do is use paint weights to make the joints only effect the area you want to control.

Something like this:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC7uOrhtGS0
