Parent constraint causing fatal error

I've got a scene where a T-rex eats a human. I want to parent constraint the human's hips to the rex's head so that he follows while getting tossed around. Both files are referenced in; the human was made with Autodesk's character generator. Whenever I try to constrain the hips, I get an error message saying the file contains unknown nodes or data - the same message I get if I try saving an .ma file as .mb or vice versa. Problem is, both files are mb files, so I don't know why I get this message. It then proceeds to cause a fatal error and crash.

I've tried importing the human instead of referencing, same problem. The error seems to happen once I try to set keyframes on the human rig. If I bring it into the scene fresh with no keyframes and set the constraint, it works, but as soon as I try to key it, Maya crashes again. I've done the exact same thing in another scene that also uses the character generator and it worked fine, so I can't imagine what's causing the problem in this case.

Any ideas?

UPDATE: I found a workaround; it's not ideal but it seems to be working so far. I constrained the master node of the rig instead of just the hips; again it's not the best place to work from but if anyone else has this issue, that was how I solved it!
