Mesh not binding to the skeleton Joints in Maya 2025

Hello, I have this character that got an accessory added to it later in the pipeline and now needs to be binded to an existing skeleton/control rig. Unfortunately I am not using Referenced files so I had to import the accessory mesh into the scene with an FBX.
When I try to bind it to the skeleton, if I click on it in the viewport, the gizmo is greyed out and under INPUTS I have a skin cluster (like it should be), but if I try to move the mesh with the bones or controls it stays in place, and when I try to paint skinweights, where the joint list should be its empty.
I've tried to change the binding skin settings, delete the skin cluster and try again, have 2 skin clusters, adding the joints manually (Edit Influence --> Add Influence), deleting and reimporting the FBX, duplicating the FBX and deleting the old one and deleted preferences (for maya 2025), but nothing seems to work.
Unfortunately I cannot share the file but could share very limited pictures of the settings, as the work is under NDA.
I was wondering if anyone has a solution to this, I have tried everything I know :''''''(
