maya's version of flash's symbol

Does maya have a version of flash's symbol? I mean, is there a way to make an object in maya, and copy it. Then, whatever I do to one copy will happen to the other copy? This would be so I would not have to keep copying and pasting the object.

You can use the connection editor to connect attributes, e.g the tranlateX of obj1, and the translateX of obj2, so when you move obj1, it moves obj2.  Is this what you're looking for? It can be found in: Window->General Editors-> Connection Editor (on the main bar)

If you're modeling an object, you can use Edit->Duplicate Special.  In the options for Duplicate Special, select 'Instance' and 'Parent.' The copies will be modified as the original object is.
