Importing/opening a free rig into maya 2017/18

Good day all,

I am a newbie when it comes importing free rigs from many sites to use in maya 2017/18.

I want to work with the rigs but every time I import them or open them up there are error issues with concerns of mental ray, the geometry on the rig is black in spots, missing character controls, missing nodes and playback issues (scrubbing in time line-maya crashes).

It seems that either when I import the rig or opening up the .mb or .ma maya file there are always error issues in the script editor.

Can someone please tell me the best setup with screen shots of the maya preferences for the arnold renderer, legacy, missing nodes, etc issues?

Also, when I try animating with the rigs do I save it as a .mb or .ma file?

Thank you and please advise,

steve

Mentalray node missing issue is nothing to be concerned of in you are focusing on animation. That message comes because mentalray is not installed.

For the black spots try to change the renderer.

Its best to save as .ma so then you can open it in newer versions of maya too. .ma is the uncompressed format. Screenshot (51).png

Ok.  Thank you but what should be the settings for the cameras and what camera do I pick?

Sorry I am learning.

Please provide screenshots.

Thanks!  Are those the correct numbers that the camera should have?

Please advise,

Those are the default values,  You can go crazy on those and test it. Like some times I change the "Near clip plane " from "0.100" to "0.0100".
