How to achieve this metaball-like effect?

Hey guys, first time posting here.

I am currently working on a project and somehow hit a wall in achieving a certain effect. Below is an example of the effect. Just wondering if anyone knows how to re-create a similar effect?

I've tried a couple of things on my side, but so far, this is the closest that I can get.

As you can see, my version has got the slightly warped edges, tried every setting possible but still can't get rid of it. Basically, what I did on my end is I used a shrink wrap deformer on a plane and the V shape geometry. Then i animated the 'envelope' attribute to simulate it rising up. The animation works fine, however, the quality of the shrink wrap suffers.

If I set the falloff attribute to 1, this is the result. The jagged edge is probably due to diagonal lines cutting across quads. (plane mesh resolution is at 300 by 300)

If I set the falloff attribute to a higher number like 12. This is the result I get.

This is the result of my final version, notice the wavy edges along the inner V. I've tried tweaking the settings of every parameter in the shrink wrap deformer but no luck so far.

Have also tried rotating the plane to match the diagonal lines of the V shape, slightly improved, but still has got bumps along the side.

Prior to this method, I have also tried using ncloth simulation but it was slow and produced a similar artifact.

And here I am, at my wits end trying to get this effect as close to the example as possible. Would love to hear if anyone has any idea on to improve my approach or achieve the effect using another method. Thanks all!

Cheers,

Wing

Slap a delta mush deformer on it. Maybe it will help. Good luck.
