HELP: Unable to import video/image sequence reference for animation

Hi, I am unable to import an image sequence or movie into an image plane or a regular plane.

I encounter an error that says: // Error: Unable to load the image file, '(filename)', for imagePlaneShape1 //

For movie files, I have tried .mov & .mp4 format and it did not work. I have also tried .jpg & .tiff files for images, both did not work as well.

The image plane on my end appears to just be one singular line in the middle of the grid, no image/video appears.

I would appreciate some help! I am currently using Maya 2020.

Does a single image in the ImagePlane work? The ScriptEditor should have spitted out some Warning/Error message, that has hints.

If Maya supports a single image, then it is probably something codecs- for vids or naming- for images related.

And there it becomes complex, as not everything is supported in Maya and is vaguely documented. MOV, a Quicktime format, is just a container, it might contain whatever codec video. MP4 is another container, likely with H.264 codec, and there it is unclear if it is supported with Maya. Whereas, MayaDocs claim it supports MPEG4 (Quicktime), a combination of which I could not find in the encoding software I use, AME2020. Still, AVI can be used, no codecs mentioned.

Because of that unclarity, unless I have time to do numerous experiments, I'd try sticking to image sequences, however those should be named properly:

If I remember correctly, JPGs were working for me. In any case, if not working, stick to Maya's IFF.
