Finger Rigging

I'm trying to rig a hand and am following this video, but I just can't seem to get the fingers to work correctly. I've tried reaching out to the video creator and he took a look at my file on his computer and it worked fine. The problem is that the parent joint on the first 'knuckle' is acting like the child of its own child (the next knuckle joint further down the finger). When I try rotating the first and second together to simulate closing a fist or something, the parent knuckle moves its position in line with the child's rotation. I would really appreciate some help. Been stuck on this for a few days.Finger_Rig_Help.PNG

It's hard to say based on that information. If you want to post the file, I can take a look and see what I can find.

So I tried it on my laptop and it worked fine. Not sure why but could be just my old desktop. Also not sure how to post the file. It keeps rejecting it when I post.

Yeah, there could be something odd going on with your machine. If you would still like me to look at it, you could put the file in a cloud based service like dropbox or google drive and share the link.

Ok, so looking at your scene, there is nothing in there that would be causing that issue. I think it is an issue with your machine. I would suggest closing Maya trashing your prefs folder(I typically will rename the prefs folder to something like prefs_old) then restarting Maya. If that doesn't work Then I would try restarting your machine.

As a side note, that's a fun character! I would suggest placing the finger joints higher into the knuckle. This will allow the lower bone to orbit around the knuckle without colliding through it. Same thing for the ankle joints.

Crazy. Deleting the prefs worked. Thanks so much! I've been using my laptop since I ran into that and now I can get back to it.
